Phonics at Willaston Primary
Intent
At Willaston Primary Academy, we are passionate about ensuring all children become confident and enthusiastic readers and writers. We believe that Read, Write, Inc (RWI) phonics provides the foundations of learning to make the development into fluent reading and writing easier and our aim is for our children to be able to read with accuracy and confidence, and above all to love reading. Children learn to read fluently and at speed so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary, spelling and handwriting. Through RWI phonics children learn a simple alphabetic code followed by a more complex code. All reading books progress cumulatively, matched to the sound’s children are learning and already know. The teaching of phonics is of high priority. This approach has been shown to provide a quick and efficient way for most young children to learn to read and write words on the page, fluently and accurately and we endeavour for children to develop this skill so that it becomes automatic. A key element of the Read Write Inc. approach is that practice across the groups is completely consistent.
