PE

Physical Education

The aim of PE at Willaston Primary Academy is to support children in enjoying being active and developing life-long skills and confidence to continue to live a healthy and active lifestyle beyond their school years. PE is taught through our skill based curriculum rather than specific sports or activities; it builds on skills through games and activities to then move forward and use those learnt skills within a suitable sport or discipline. This allows children to be involved in the choice of sports they take part in and therefore a higher level of enjoyment and success. Key areas of learning are throwing and catching, flexibility, speed, balance, strength as well as team work, sportsmanship and tactics. Progress is monitored on an individual basis and allows teachers to plan meaningful and challenging lessons to ensure children achieve their individual potential.

Within PE children are encouraged to take a leadership role and support their fellow team members within games and during warm ups. Competitive sport at Willaston is wide ranging from gymnastics to cross country running to netball developing a strong sense of pride when representing their school. Our inclusive ethos is supported as we enter several teams to many competitions and children are also invited to a Games for All Festival specifically designed for children with SEN, who may not ordinarily experience a team or competitive sporting opportunity. This inclusive ethos is shared across our curriculum.
